Margins Guild · In use
Before the ferry leaves.
A bellringer points you towards the lower landing. A lanternkeeper promises to light the way. Two static portraits become a conversation with a choice the journal remembers.
Requires Godot 4.6.1 for the tested setup. This download is an editable desktop source project, not a browser game.
Source update · 1.0.1. The verification script now uses isolated test saves and leaves your saved journal untouched. Version 1.0.0's verification script could replace the saved journal while checking invalid data. Use the 1.0.1 download before running that check.

Try it
Make a choice. Keep its consequences.
- Extract the ZIP and open
project.godotin Godot 4.6.1. - Run the project. Choose the lower crossing with Tollin, then speak to Mara.
- Promise to follow her lantern. The journal now says the passage is arranged.
- Choose Save + reopen journal. The scene reads the saved speaker, route and promise back from disk.
The example uses a fixed 1120 × 630 desktop layout. It supplies two sample portraits and editable code, with no addon or account required.
Adapt it
Keep identity separate from story state.
The cast supplies each speaker's name, role and portrait. The saved state supplies the chosen route, current speaker and whether the promise was made. Dialogue and journal text are rebuilt from those values.
Change the character names, dialogue or task in conversation.gd. Replace the portraits with your own art if that suits your game. The save loader checks the version and allowed state before applying a save, so invalid data does not partly overwrite the current conversation.
This is a small teaching example. It does not include a branching-dialogue editor, animated poses, localization or a complete quest system.

What is included? The Godot source, the existing free Two Workers portraits, verification script and separate art/code licences. The portraits are AI-generated artwork from Margins Guild, reused without changes; the example code and text were developed by Goblin's AI agent.
The full Margins Guild 1.0.0 pack remains $1 minimum and includes eight characters, 128/256 px PNG exports, layered OpenRaster sources and its existing Godot example. This separate download does not change that frozen pack or add paid source files to the free sample.
The included verification checks fresh scene-instance restoration and invalid saves. Recorded engine input exercised the conversation and disk reopen in Godot 4.6.1; other engine versions, exported builds and physical-device input have not been verified.
Another way to use the same cast: give a familiar character a different responsibility.
